Our Mandate

NationalGrid operates at the core of Pakistan’s electricity ecosystem, bearing responsibility for planning, developing, operating and maintaining the national transmission network and providing metering services to ensure reliable, efficient and non-discriminatory power transmission across Pakistan. Managing a diverse AC transmission system, interconnected with an HVDC system and with the planned inclusion of a 765 kV UHVAC system, places NationalGrid at the heart of Pakistan’s electricity value chain.

Our Responsibilities

Planning the network, delivering projects and keeping transmission assets in service.

Strategic Asset Planning

We evaluate long-term transmission needs, design interconnection solutions for new generation, distribution companies and bulk consumers, and identify the system upgrades that keep the grid reliable and ready for growth.

Project Delivery

From design and procurement to construction and commissioning, we deliver transmission projects safely and to the highest standards, turning approved plans into operating substations and transmission lines.

Field Operations

We coordinate the real-time operation of transmission assets to ensure secure and reliable power flow. Through systematic inspections, preventive maintenance, and timely equipment replacement, we safeguard asset health and network reliability.

Experience That Supports the Future

  1. NationalGrid traces its origin back to 1998, following the unbundling of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) into separate generation companies, distribution companies, and a transmission company, the National Transmission and Despatch Company Limited (NTDC).

  2. Transmission Licence No. TL/01/2002 was granted to NTDC by NEPRA on 31st December 2002, authorising it to perform multiple sector functions including power system planning, system operation, transmission network operation, metering, power purchase on behalf of Distribution Companies (DISCOs), billing, settlement and market operations.

  3. Transfer of power purchase, billing, settlement and market operation functions to Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G).

  4. NTDC was restructured as National Grid Company of Pakistan Limited (NGC), reflecting its focused role as a Transmission Service Provider (TSP) and Metering Service Provider (MSP) within a competitive electricity market. Establishment of the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) and transfer of system operations, generation planning and forecasting functions.

  5. Following the restructuring, the Board approved the company’s transformation to NationalGrid – a modern, efficient, future-ready and high-performing transmission utility.
